Canada Goose Management Week 2011

The management of the Canada Goose can often lead to some very controversial trapping assignments for the nuisance wildlife control professional in North America- The United States & Canada.

This week , SitesByRobb’s The Wildlife Pro Network will be discussing the management of the resident Canada Goose.

We hope to be discussing various aspects of Canadian Goose Management for the nuisance wildlife control professional from ponds and lakes to the Golf Courses and airports.

Our special guest this week will be Cody Basiuska, with LoomAcres , an Airport Wildlife Specialist company and member in good standing with The Wildlife Pro Network and NWCOA . Geese make up a big part of the many airport nuisance species his company controls in various airports across the United States.

  • The world height record for a strike is 37,000 feet.(Bird Strike Committee USA)

Are you concerned about the present population of resident canada geese you may have on your property or property you may be responsible to manage?

According to the United State Fish & Wildlife Service (USFA) “ Most of the 11 subspecies of Canada geese (Branta canadensis) are encountered in the lower 48 States only during the fall, winter and spring of the year and migrate to the arctic and sub-arctic regions of Canada and Alaska to nest. Some geese stay in the U.S. year around. The Service identifies “resident Canada geese” as those nesting within the lower 48 States in the months of March, April, May, or June, and reside within the lower 48 States in the months of April, May, June, July, and August. No evidence presently exists documenting inter-breeding between Canada geese nesting within the lower 48 States and those subspecies nesting in northern Canada and Alaska”

Large flocks of resident Canada geese can denude grassy areas, including parks, pastures, golf courses, lawns, and other landscaped areas where the grass is kept short and where there are ponds, lakes, and other bodies of water nearby. At airports, resident Canada geese have become a significant safety threat, resulting in dangerous takeoff and landing conditions, costly repairs, and fatal airplane accidents resulting from bird strikes. Excessive goose droppings are also a health concern, and have contributed to the temporary closure of public beaches in several States by local health departments. Agricultural and natural resource damage, including depredation of grain crops, overgrazed pastures and degraded water quality, have increased as resident Canada goose populations have grown.

Every state in the union can cut budget money by longer having to match federal funds for USDA Wildlife Services. Every governor in the US can find money by simply stop matching federal funds for wildlife control projects that can be done by local business. George Cera put it best when he had the contract he put the money back into the community. The new truck was never purchased from the local dealer and the hiring of USDA in the end has hurt the local economy in many ways!
