Canada Goose Management Week 2011

The management of the Canada Goose can often lead to some very controversial trapping assignments for the nuisance wildlife control professional in North America- The United States & Canada.

This week , SitesByRobb’s The Wildlife Pro Network will be discussing the management of the resident Canada Goose.

We hope to be discussing various aspects of Canadian Goose Management for the nuisance wildlife control professional from ponds and lakes to the Golf Courses and airports.

Our special guest this week will be Cody Basiuska, with LoomAcres , an Airport Wildlife Specialist company and member in good standing with The Wildlife Pro Network and NWCOA . Geese make up a big part of the many airport nuisance species his company controls in various airports across the United States.

Notes from his official web site (loomacres.com) worth sharing:

  • The first reported bird strike was recorded by Oliver Wright in his diary, and occurred on September 7, 1905
  • A 12-lb Canada goose struck by a 150-mph aircraft at lift-off generates the kinetic energy of a 1,000-lb weight dropped from a height of 10 feet (Bird strike Committee USA)
  • The world height record for a strike is 37,000 feet.(Bird Strike Committee USA)
We are encouraging our WpN members who work in the Canada Geese Management Industry to contact me on our Facebook Discussion Forum  and join us in the discussion.  Some of the partipants we expect this Sunday are Leon Melton B Gone Wildlife , Reginald Murray of Oklahoma Wildlife Control, and 30+ year wildlife control veteran Ron “Jonesie ” Jones of Southern New Jersey .

Are you concerned about the present population of resident canada geese you may have on your property or property you may be responsible to manage?

According to the United State Fish & Wildlife Service (USFA) “ Most of the 11 subspecies of Canada geese (Branta canadensis) are encountered in the lower 48 States only during the fall, winter and spring of the year and migrate to the arctic and sub-arctic regions of Canada and Alaska to nest. Some geese stay in the U.S. year around. The Service identifies “resident Canada geese” as those nesting within the lower 48 States in the months of March, April, May, or June, and reside within the lower 48 States in the months of April, May, June, July, and August. No evidence presently exists documenting inter-breeding between Canada geese nesting within the lower 48 States and those subspecies nesting in northern Canada and Alaska”

Large flocks of resident Canada geese can denude grassy areas, including parks, pastures, golf courses, lawns, and other landscaped areas where the grass is kept short and where there are ponds, lakes, and other bodies of water nearby. At airports, resident Canada geese have become a significant safety threat, resulting in dangerous takeoff and landing conditions, costly repairs, and fatal airplane accidents resulting from bird strikes. Excessive goose droppings are also a health concern, and have contributed to the temporary closure of public beaches in several States by local health departments. Agricultural and natural resource damage, including depredation of grain crops, overgrazed pastures and degraded water quality, have increased as resident Canada goose populations have grown.

We are licensed in specific canada geese control and canada geese depredation orders from the authorities (Nests and Eggs, Agricultural, and Public Health) designed to address resident Canada goose depredation, damage, and conflict management.

Podcast: Feral Cat Handling & Considerations 2011

Feral Cat Handling & Considerations 2011

a feral cat in Beijing

Feral cats because they are seen as both  domestic and companion animals can be a big challenge for the NWCO because of legal and ethical considerations many new in the business may not even take into consideration. There are many ways cats in general are classified into four categories indoor, limited-range, free-range, and feral.

Stephen Vantassel, author , Feral Cats and Their Management went into detail on things to consider before taking on your next feral cat job and the biggest one is understanding completely all laws that may apply locally in each City, County and State Government. I recommend in addition to listening to this podcast you also take the time to read Feral Cats and Their Management http://www.ianrpubs.unl.edu/live/ec1781/build/ec1781.pdf.

Stephen was also  joined by David McLeod of the Atlanta, Ga area, David Schmidt of the St Louis Area and Anthony Del Campo of West Palm Beach Florida who all added their experiences to the evenings podcast. Before you take on your next feral cat job listen to this podcast.
